James Temple is the senior editor for climate and energy at MIT Technology Review, where he covers the role of technology in combating climate change. For the past several years, he’s been primarily focused on negative emissions, covering challenges with carbon offsets programs, emerging approaches to carbon removal and storage, and policy efforts to support the nascent space.

His reporting with ProPublica on California’s forests offset program was selected for Best American Science and Nature Writing collection. Previously, he was a senior director at the Verge, deputy managing editor at Recode, and columnist at the San Francisco Chronicle.

James holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism from Ohio University.
